Little Fish

It comes to a point where noting the similarities between the film and the hellish landscape that the current pandemic is, reaches the level of self-parody. (“ She Dies Tomorrow has a virus that spreads from person to person, it’s like COVID-19 !!!”). If we’re not careful, he’ll turn into the next “[insert famous city here] like his own character in the movie.” However, between Little Fish and 2020, there is a clear resemblance to a mysterious virus spreading around the world that seems to have no end in sight.

Fish ‘s virus , dubbed NIA (neurogenic disease), causes memory loss, either gradually or immediately. Its origins and information about how it spreads is highly obscure to the scientific community, and director Chad Hartigan adds some clever finishing touches to building the world – instead of trying to beat it, many are just trying to live with it. One chilling scene shows a bus driver getting sick, stopping the bus and instantly walking away into the distance; in other scenes, people panic over others they no longer know, begging them to calm down. Many people go online to offer their own home remedies that are as dangerous as you might have guessed. At the very least, you can get discounted tattoos to remember important information.

But the focus remains on one couple, Emma and Jude ( Olivia Cook and Jack O’Connell). Little Fish is not an infection , but a tearful romance . Jude realizes that he contracted the virus after becoming a little more forgetful than usual, and Emma must do everything possible to prolong his memory and, accordingly, the time of their life together. “Little fish” is a very strong metaphor for communicating with a loved one with Alzheimer’s – the very name comes from an important shared memory they have. You can also see the nature of the NIA as a sense of life in quarantine, where yesterday, today and tomorrow are mixed together.

The details become unclear for Jude. What color was Emma’s wedding dress? Who was at the wedding? Hartigan has a few nifty tricks up his sleeve, in which fragments of memories are blurred or hidden behind lens flare. Although, I would like the film to be less story-driven and more experimental. Maybe something akin to Michael Almereida’s Marjorie Prime , who has more time to study the themes of death and memory.

Luckily, Little Fishy has Olivia Cook . She exudes a sense of kindness that few actors can display, and gracefully weakens the script’s attachment to cheerfulness and largely unnecessary storytelling with her dignity as a performer. Quite often, Rybka rushes to the fence, hoping that you have a little tear.
